In the spring of Year 5, The Cat once again gave birth to her family in the fields. By now, a regular photographic record was being kept and there are plenty of daily, weekly and monthly pictures of Pedal, Ratchet and Sprocket.

Sadly, Ratchet passed away during the summer. Maybe this encouraged Pedal and Sprocket to become even more closely bonded – either way, they were particularly close and the underlying theme of this October snapshot is the love they felt for each other.

These photos are particularly poignant as, only a few days later, they were both poisoned in the fields (possible after eating a poisoned rat) and came close to losing their lives.

Fortunately they managed to recover although Pedal never fully regained his strength and remained smaller and frailer than he should have been.

Sleeping nose-to-tail…

Playing in the garden…

Sprocket using her brother as a pillow…

Entwined in sleep, sharing their dreams…

Sprocket grooming Pedal…

…and Pedal returning the compliment.

Relaxing together, two becoming one…
