Luckily there was somewhere in the drive where food bowls could be left under cover, protected from most of the bad weather. It was a little storage area, divided in two by a half-height mesh panel; the area at the back had once been home to a visiting cockerel who came to stay for a few weeks one summer.
But cockerels aside, it was a useful area for the cats with food bowls at the front (and sometimes a wooden box for napping), and the more secure and secluded area behind (just a scramble and a jump over the panel) used for more private naps and also by cats who were feeling unwell.

A view from the terrace showing the driveway feeding area with Twilight’s son Syllabub and his younger brother Bala at the feeding bowls.

Bala being curious – it was easy enough to jump onto the top of the sub-dividing panel and jump down into the more secluded area at the back. It looks as though his mother, Twilight, was just stepping into the wooden box behind the panel.

Phantom, asleep on a feed sack in the secluded rear area. Yes, there was a fruit box, but she preferred to lie on a sack.

The header photo shows NVQ waiting for Twilight to finish at the bowls.
