With Mr Grey and Ana having moved on, there was the opportunity for another alpha-male to add the garden to his domain. A big alpha-male cat had been spotted on the wall of another garden on the other side of the fields, and there seemed a certain inevitability that he would eventually find his way to the garden.

We spotted him one Saturday morning, walking over the aviary roof and, within a few weeks, he was visiting the garden regularly to eat. We named him Saturday; he had probably been visiting before we spotted him, probably coming when there were no humans around, but slowly becoming braver.

There were no complaints from The Cat; Saturday fitted her criteria well – strong, orange, and silent. He knew where the food was and made sure to visit when the humans were not in the garden.

Saturday was not afraid of fighting to protect his territory, but only as a last resort. His first move was to intimidate the opposition which he did by standing over them, wailing and posturing as they sank lower and lower, his hackles rising more and more, making him look enormous. He would then turn very slowly and walk away, leaving them feeling fortunate to still be alive.

He made himself at home in the garden, napping in boxes and sharing siestas with The Cat. Even the biggest, fiercest alpha-males had to take a nap here and there, after all.

Yes, there were more up-and-coming alpha-males in the neighbourhood, but for the time being, Saturday was in charge in The Cat’s Garden, and this did please The Cat greatly.
